Tems dedicates her mother to her Billboard Breakthrough honor.
Tems, a well-known performer, won the coveted Breakthrough award at the 2024 Billboard Women In Music.
The leading ladies in music are honored during the award event. Rising talents in the arts, media, production, and business are recognized by Billboard for their contributions to the sector and society at large. Renowned for her famous role in Black-ish, Tracee Ellis Ross served as the energetic emcee of the Awards event. Live streaming of the event took place at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles on March 6, 2024.
At the coveted award ceremony were notable women from the business, including Coco Jones, Saweetie, Justin Skye, Ice Spice, K-pop group New Jeans, Pink Panthress, and three-time Grammy winner Victoria Monet. The Woman of the Year award went to Koral G, who accepted it from Sofia Vergara.
Tems took home the award for Breakthrough award and was the cover of Billboard Women in Music Issue. The talented artist performed Not an Angel during the ceremony. While collecting the award she dedicated it to her mum. She said “My heart hasn’t stopped beating for the past 30 minutes. One thing that is uniquely special to me is that I am in a room full of amazing women and I am standing with a continent behind me. I want to dedicate this award to my mum who is the first woman I ever met”.
Billboard described her as a catalyst for the new generation of women in Music. The issue said, “While Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade led the charge for African female artists in the 2010s, in this decade, Tems has paved the way for a new generation that also includes Ayra Starr and Tyla”.
